Martin, The AC Propulsion system is a true 3 phase AC induction motor and controller. You can read more about it on AC web site. Seimens made some competing designs a few year ago. Interestingly, they were targeting a dual use market-where the controller could also be used to generate AC for your remote home-through PV or wind turbine input. There is a new electric car in India also uses the same AC induction motor and controller design. The reason these units are the top of the line is that they allow easier regenerative braking as well as PLC control. As for brushless DC motors, I would really prefer these. The controls are much simpler. However, at this point in time, there are no high HP motors. The only readily available units are for driving individual wheels. Though this is an option, it is much more complicated. Bob Yahoo!
