Matt,
I do exactly that.  When I pull into my garage I open my door and the 2 amp float charger with the cigarette lighter connection I added is right there within reach.  I pop out the lighter and pop in the charger.
When leaving I get into the car, just pull out the charger - lighter connection and lay it down alongside the car for when I return.
This has been working fine for years.  I always have a fully topped off battery.  It also helps a lot because I often drain the battery when working on my computer system and the car is not running.
If your battery has died a number of times already it may have lost its ability to hold a full charge...
