I agree with you, but the media industries do not. They will happily
sue you if you cross their radar.
I got a nasty call from my ISP once. Seems a complaint was filed by a
copyright owner against me. I was using Bit Torrent to download the
previous night's episodes of a broadcast television show and they
didn't like that. I said, "Wait a minute; this content is broadcast
freely over the air. What's the difference? It's not like I'm stealing
anything; it isn't even for sale, and they give it to anyone with a
television and a set of rabbit ears." The response was, basically, the
copyright owner didn't like it and if I continued they were going to
sue me. End of discussion.
Eh, they can bite me. I found another way to get the shows over the
Internet with virtually no chance of being traced. Screw these people.
And I'm not buying their DVD boxed set when it comes out now, either,
because I think they're a bunch of pricks. But as long as they
continue to broadcast it over the air, I feel morally OK in
downloading it.
Now, since you're just pulling off of your ISP's Usenet servers you're
basically immune to problems from the copyright holders.
