The goto in Dan's email shows a Chrysler Hemi cross section. If you look carefully, the pushrods (i.e.. not direct cam to valve action) both go down and to the left to the cam shaft which would be presumably in the "valley" of a V-engine. One cam, two banks of cylinders. The U.S. description refers, in general, to the shape of the combustion chambers. Having the spark plug come out of the center of the cylinder typically implies that the shape of the chamber is dish. Incidentally, the engine shown is typical of the Chrysler type engines most often found in the big dragster cars where the H.P. gets into several thousand.
