As far as I'm aware a Hemi engine is what we in the UK
would call an overhead camed engine.  Not a side valve
one or any of the older types of engines.  It is to do
with a dished or hemispherical combustion chamber.
Goto http://auto.howstuffworks.com/hemi2.htm and have
a look.
The term is not used over here in the UK alot as
almost all of our engines are Hemi's

Yes I can see what it's short for, but does it
literally mean perfectly
hemispherical? The D's heads are dished.
