The only difference in the "bolt pattern" on the crank is the two centre
bearings are cross-bolted in addition to the main cap nuts. Did Volvo do
a 3 litre block in the US then? This is the biggest problem with
interchanging the blocks. There are three sizes of liner and they are
not interchangable. I discovered that it's tough to have a smaller block
bored out.
Actually the even fire engines are considerably simpler because the cam
timing is the same left to right and the only change they made to
accomodate this was to offset the pin on the right hand cam sprocket by
15 degrees. All the crankshafts are interchangable, an the conrods are
only larger because the crankpins on the even fire lumps need to be
stronger due to being offset.
Personally I'd go for the Link ECU. Good value, excellent feature set,
and fantastic range when it comes to active turbo control.
