I don't see it that way. The church is taking
advantage of desperate people for the purpose of
converting them to the religion.

I think there is a lot wrong with it. But, we have
been over that already.

They may not be using force in YOUR church... Or at
least you don't think so, because you are part of the
machine that is doing the conversion. If you take a
step back and look at the techniques that MANY
religions use, you will see they are all common
persuasion methods, or even hypnotic if not down right
manipulative.
But, this is part of what the religion is. Even
today. Go to the Vatican web site
(http://www.vatican.va/) and see for yourself. Just
about every thing you read on there includes
encouragement to "save", or "spread the word"... AKA,
convert others.
