The anti nuclear movement started a long time ago.   It was part of the
fear campaign used by the US government to justify the cold war.   They
bombarded people with the fear of nuclear bombs.  The need for bomb
shelter and the "Duck and Cover" movie they showed all kids in school.
It was a lot of fear propaganda.  Face really, duck and cover will have
no effect against a nuclear bomb.
At the same time the government DID NOTHING to disswayed the
misunderstanding that nuclear power plants can explode.
They simply can not, yet the US government NEVER waged any campaign to
educate the public about the truth.  (Other countries did educate their
people though!)
It is interesting that as the oil industry bought the coal industry and
then the gas industry (under Regan) that Regan shut down the breeder
reactor program.
It is also interesting that the US government also started this
plutonium "can be stolen by terrorists" disinformation to stop
reprocessing or nuclear wastes in this country.  This makes for a much
larger volume of nuclear wastes to store.
BTW the US nuclear weapons program which is far greater than Russia's
ever was,  has generated 3 times the waste that the whole nuclear power
industry has.   Yes, most nuclear waste to be stored CAME from
weapons!!!
Anyway one can not deny the coincidence of the consolidation of the oil
gas and coal industry  paralleled the demise of the nuclear power
industry.   (Weapons production still continues though.)
The media added to this hysteria with the Three Mile Island crap.
Essentially no radiation was released during that whole incident.
That was what the safety systems were designed for and the worked.
As for Chernobyl, it was bad luck that it happened in Russia.  At the
time, the US had 3 graphite mediated reactors for producing weapons
grade  plutonium (they are all shut down now.)  Russia only had two
graphite reactors for electrical generation.   Graphite reactors have
always been a bad idea.  They always had a high probability of failure.
BTW, the latest report by the UN on Chernobyl shows that the radiation
contamination was far less than it was made out to be.
One would hope that science will again take over in the US and we can
get back to a state of the art nuclear program.
OH, But wait,  the Right wing idiots now want to ignore science and
start teach creationism.  Well, that says it all,
Only idiots run this country and science will never be the truth.
