I'd say no.  The rumor probably came from the liner
design, but I'd find it hard to believe that 30 years
ago someone would design an aluminum diesel engine. 
They run too hot, and too high a compression.

Good point..  Something to consider for anyone who
decided to try this on a DeLorean.

Volvo had some Diesel models about the same time they
were using the PRV.  I think it was a D24 engine built
by Volkswagen.  Taking a quick look on Google, I see
the D24 was mounted to the M46 transmission.  The
Volvo version of the PRV (B28) was used in the 265
model also with the M46 transmission...  So, this may
not be such a complex conversion!  Best thing to do is
find a D24 engine and see if the DeLorean bell housing
will mount to it.

They may be able to set up road side "sniffers" to
detect fuel types.  However, I agree with you.
