According to the information compiled by Knut on the DML,
if you go here: http://www.dmcnews.com/faq/n_chron.htm
and click on the .PDF labled "DMC Build Rate"
you will see that around 1800 cars, the highest number ever built in one 
month
was in October, 1981.
Of which almost 36% of the cars made that year were automatics, and of which
almost 10% of those were gray.
It is funny that is such a low number because I have run across quite a few
gray automatics of that year.
I was told by someone that the reason that is is because the cars made
during this perios had the best quality and held up the longest over the 
years.
I can not remember who told me this, and I have no idea of how true it is
but it would be neat to make note of the "best" cars and thier build dates.
Best being a concorse, worst being non-running.
