Rich,
To clarify: Some folks think the email-based discussion list is not the way to go, and want to do web-based forums.
In my experience, there are web folks and email folks, and very few are both.  I run and/or moderate 9 email lists and 3 or 4 forums, and even being the admin, I hardly read my own forums.
The email-based discussion list will continue on as long as there are folks subscribed.  The web-based forums may do well in addition, but it is highly unlikely they would ever 'replace' the email list.

Greg, what I'm hearing is that some folks here think that they may
like shifting over to a web-based newsgroup so we can dispense with
all the spam and add/have other features that Yahoo would make us pay
  for.
To answer Ryan's question, if someone hosts a decent web-based
newsgroup and others like it, I have no issue with completely
shutting this one down. I haven't asked Greg how he feels about that
and will let him speak for himself.
