Oh I agree the "D" is no Porsche, and should have been priced lower --
if it could have been done. Unfortunately like the Tucker, the DMC was
doomed from creation by a number of reasons.
I also agree that driving your first car after 25 years puts you in an
exclusive club, even more so being an AMC. Lets just leave it at that.

I graduated in 1983 -- am thinking about my 25th reunion.
Those ubiquitous Fairmonts, er, Mustangs (did that marque EVER stand
on its own 2 feet?) were priced around $8,000. That's where DMC's
potential buyers were.
$25,000 pitted the car squarely against the likes of Porsche, and
let's be honest -- a DeLorean is no Porsche. A very limited number of
buyers were willing to pay that kind of money for the unusual doors,
but as we all know that market was exhausted within a couple of months.
Back to high school: I get kudos from former classmates for still
driving "the little green car". My first girlfriend remembers trying
to deal with the non-reclining seats (my parents bought a cheap
model). Back seat was of course non-functional -- Gremlin/Spirit/SX4
were ostensibly 4 seaters built on the 2 seat AMX floorpan.
Speaking of women: My AMC has been more faithful to me than my ex-wife.
I'd argue that still driving the same car you earned your license in
places a driver in a very exclusive club. And it isn't as though my
AMC has deteriorated -- it remains the second best conditioned vehicle
in my stable (the DeLorean is not Number 1 -- a Lincoln holds that
distinction).
