I'm a bit curious about that myself. I do know that a $10M loan was
approved for DMC, from some high-risk lenders out of Washington, D.C.
They were desperatly trying to call him the day that he got arrested,
so that he could sign the paperwork, and they could get the money over
to keep the factory open.
The UK government was upset that DeLorean did not inject much, if any
of his personal finances into the company(ies). So after the receiver
decided that DMC was viable (and could perhaps even take over
production of 2 other failing British car companies), they decided to
make a final deal. A HUGE government grant for DMC would be approved.
HOWEVER, the stipulation was the JZD would need to inject $20M into the
project, of his own personal funds. He could have done it too. He had
the $10M loan, the $5M Manhattan Apartment, the $600K Pauma Valley
advocado ranch, and the $12M Logan Mfg division that he could all have
sold off. But because of the pressure against him, and the death
threats twards his family, he decided to take the flight to California
that day... Of course, I don't know where the other $10M was supposed
to have come from.
Now while this is only speculation on my part, the thinking of the
British government was beautiful, in their construction of this deal.
DeLorean would then be financially anchored to the project, investors
could become more confident in the stock, and by taking over another
car line, more profit would become available. And of course, both
dealer networks could be intertwined to one another, to distribute both
cars globally.
But hey, life happens.
