Erik - So the situation is that the internally splined U-joint won't
slide onto the externally splined input shaft of the rack?  The
steering knuckle is actually something else entirely - people can head
off in bizarre directions with a misunderstanding of terminology.
That said, the splines must be very clean and have no damage.  The
splines are held to extremely tight tolerances because the
steering "feel" is so critical.  Make sure that all is squeaky clean
and the splines are straight and true, and then apply some good grease
*lightly* to the rack input shaft.  You may have to wiggle it around
and "walk" it on a bit as the splines mesh.  Don't force anything, or
the splines will be damaged or deformed - not a good thing.  One last
thing - the U-joint housing is split along one side so that it can be
spread a little bit.  If it's tight on the shaft, you can insert the
blade of a screwdriver into the slot, and pry it open a little bit to
ease the installation.
