Well, just like with Quicktime, the real question is which codec is being 
used.  There are both Quicktime and AVI players for every modern platform, 
but some closed-source codecs haven't made it to nonstandard platforms. 
(Although pretty much every codec works fine on Windows and Mac, and 
thanks to mplayer's excellent win32 dll hooks, virtually everything also 
works on x86 Linux/Solaris/BSD machines.)

The only open and truly universal modern digital video format is mpeg.
