It's not that they can see my house. I don't care about that, even if
I did that would make me out to be a total fool - I'm pretty sure that
it's not possible for a civilian to view hi-definition satellite
video, certainly not at the level that would show people in detail.
And Greg, you couldn't flick somebody off and have it register.
Detail's not high enough, and the satellites only map an area every
couple of years, and it's not video.
I guess I wouldn't have a problem with it if the Yahoo archive wasn't
available for anyone to look through. I doubt anyone on the DMCForum
is going to do anything, but anyone can see this info.
Here follows the part where the commercial has a subtitle saying 'Do
not attempt' or 'Professional Driver - Closed Course' or
'Dramatization' - the point is, please don't do it. I'm denying right
here all responsibility for harm done to anyone from this info.
This http://venus.walagata.com/w/admiralsenn/house.jpg is my house as
seen from satellite. It's not very high-definition, but if you knew my
general location and had the picture I took this from (took a few
minutes of number tweaking at mapper.acme.com), you could follow the
roads right to the house without an address. Take an IP locator like
http://www.geobytes.com/IpLocator.htm and put in an IP address, get
lat/long, input to AcmeMapper, and instant map to target's house.
To prove my point about this, I'm going to take an IP address I pulled
out of Marc Levy's email (Freehold, NJ sounds like it might even be
his house, but for all I know this is the Yahoo server that was
assigned to his message) and run it through said programs.
Granted that the latitude and longitude aren't very precise, and I may
have picked the wrong IP address, but for the IP I found, anyway, I
get this:
http://terraserver-usa.com/tile.ashx?t=1&s=10&x=2797&y=22263&z=18
which zooms out to this, minus four of the pictures:
http://venus.walagata.com/w/admiralsenn/mysteryplace.jpg
Since it appears to be a residential area to me, it might very well be
Marc's house.. I'm not skilled in yanking info out of emails, so it
could be anything.
(If this is your house, Marc, I'll delete this message if you want.)
So I'm not some lunatic walking around thinking there's a stalker
behind every bush (lowercase bush, for you political laugh-mongers), I
just prefer not taking chances. I know that I could probably post my
name, address, and phone number without incident, but it's not hurting
anybody to be overly careful.
For those wondering why I'm suddenly so free with these pictures if
they're so easy to abuse, it's because there really isn't enough info
(I don't think) to use. Without any major reference streets, it
becomes a lot harder, which is why I didn't post any lat/long info or
anything, because THAT can lead to the full region-picture that zooms
in on a particular spot. Provided you had enough patience, you could
eventually find enough major roads and landmarks to orient yourself
and continue on, but it would take a real stalker with a lot of
patience to do so.
And most people know about the national phone numbers to call where a
full name and city gives you their phone number and sometimes their
address. Depending on how far from the mark my mapping was, I could
use that to adjust and find the exact house on satellite, giving me a
grand sum of:
Name
Address (street, city, state, zip code)
Phone number
Satellite map of area
Latitude and Longitude coordinates (useful for GPS units, especially)
E-mail address
from one email. I have no idea how much of this is common knowledge,
but it's scary what you can get from people. This is why I don't post
my name and town, and wish I hadn't here or elsewhere.
I'm not worried, because it takes a lot of patience to match an image
to an area you've never seen before, but I'm just showing that it's
possible.
P.S. For those thinking about hunting me or anyone else down, I'd like
to inform you that our house is very supportive of the Second
Amendment, and will make good use of the right stated in it. We have
in the house right now:
two paintball guns ([im]properly used, you can incapacitate and kill a
person with one)
one spudgun (also painful/deadly)
one pistol that fires .22 caliber shells (the rest of my dad's guns
aren't in the house right now)
a flare gun with three flares (also painful and/or deadly)
a crossbow with 150 pounds of pull (ouch)
Etc etc.
I never said it was a good idea to stalk people, just that it's possible.
