Hmm.. It is a rare occasion I need to pop the intake
off of any of my cars. Both the FI ones, and
Carburetor ones..
But, I can say.. I used to have a 79 camaro. Went
through carburators all the time. Needed to rebuild
them or replace them all the time, and they were NOT
cheap. I remember almost getting killed when the car
stalled due to a faulty accelerator pump diaphragm.
On the 66 mustang, the carb needs a rebuild every
other year, if not every year. To get the car to run
right, I had to have the thing drilled to make the car
run a little rich. The plugs foul about every 10K
miles, even with the electronic replacement for the
crappy "points". Now my gas mileage is even worse than
before, and I am probably killing lots of dolphins or
something.
My 1990 SHO had 210K miles on it. Sure, I had to
replace the crank position sensor once, and a few O2
sensors got changed over the years, but the spark
plugs were changed at 150K miles (just because...
they still ran fine anyway), and got consistently good
gas mileage... I did take the intake off of it once
to clean it, and the EFI had no impact on the job.
Back to the Delo..
I am no fan of the stock FI setup. But, the EFI setup
that someone on the DML did looked great. He even
made a custom intake that looked very easy to remove
if need be. Was it the best solution? I dont know..
But maybe Martin can suggest a European "donor" EFI
intake that would work well on our DeLoreans? Maybe
from the 3.0L Eagle?
