Scott,

Bending the u-bolt forward or rearward wouldn't matter because there is an
adjustment slot for that. Bending it upward would probably do more harm
than good because the horizontal part needs to be straight to fit in the
latch.

My rubber weather strip is hard and brittle even though it has no powdery
rot that I've seen on others. I'm not sure that is really the problem since
the latch is still so high that it makes the louvers hover over the strip
instead of lay on it. I'm sure the rubber was originally much softer but it
may have also been higher. And if so, then I'm having a hard time trying to
make the adjustment compensate for it.

I'm thinking now that maybe the engine cover may be resting too high. I'm
going to look at that more closely. Does anyone know a good cross-reference
for the weather strip?
