Someone, I don't recall who, told me this is hard to do if not impossible on
these control arms because it can prevent replacement of the lower ball
joint. Is this not true? I would really like to box mine before I have
them powder coated.

It's very simple, you just cut a piece of metal to fit the open side of
the arm and weld it in place. Any time you create a collum or box in
this case you will add stiffness to the component. However the person
doing the welding needs to work slowly cause they could introduce some
major heat stress and actuly make the control arm weaker.
