NAFTA was important to the auto industry, which lobbied hard for its 
ratification. Carmakers use these trade accords to build vehicles, 
manufacture parts and sell their products without regard to the 
Mexican and Canadian borders. American jobs crossed the borders, 
too ? traded for a lower-paid, foreign workforce.
