John,

At least in this area of the country, most Republicans toe the party 
line no matter what, and most of the people I know who have voted 
Democrat in the past have also voted Republican depending on the issue. 
But then I know some Democrats who simply pull the lever as well. I 
registered unaffiliated, which prevents me from voting in Primary 
elections but allows me to get campaign literature from both parties. 
What some people do is research both candidates and then make a decision 
based on which candidate agrees with their own views. (This is my 
method, however in recent years I would call it the "lesser of two evils 
method", at least in my case.) However, some people vote overwhelmingly 
upon *one* issue, such as abortion, health care, gay rights, fiscal 
policy, or the religion of the man in question.

 From what I have seen here in the South, people tend to pull the lever 
regardless of who's on the ticket. It's either a habit, or they just 
don't care to think or learn anything about the candidates.

The odd thing is that a lot of people don't vote at all. I for one 
believe that, since compulsory voting would be a bad idea, Election Day 
should be a national holiday, so nobody has to plan voting around their 
jobs. But on that day Satan will skate to work, pigs will fly, I will 
marry a brilliant gorgeous millionaire woman, and Avril Lavigne will 
have a brain larger than a grape.
