My suspicion is that the little claw feet are long gone since it just runs
round and round inside the hole. Maybe there's hope for me yet.
Can you clarify the cable? What is its purpose?

Ok.."Ain't True!!"
I just did mine last night. I unscrewed the top retaining nute and
then you just have to push and pull (Not too rough) and get the
little claw feet retainers wher you can turn them verticaklly. I was
able to push the base of the antenna to come out by the lower
windshield. Once the Feet are vertical the whole assembly will slide
out of the hole.
I would suggest you pull it out a little and then cut the cable from
the mast and tape the end of the new antenna cable to the old one(I
used duct tape and butted the two ends togeter..not overlapped..not
enough room) and then pull the new one into the car by pulling on the
old one. I had my new on installed in about 10 minutes total.
