Toby, I'm not familar with what this owner has done so I won't pass 
judgment but I will point out this subject is far more complex than 
it appears on the surface. The vast majority of such designs need to 
be carefully engineered to be both legal and effective.

Dan Stern is one of the leading authorities on automotive lighting in 
North America. He has a long and rich experience in this area of 
expertise. He's pretty opinionated about some things but you'll be 
hard pressed to find someone more knowledgable on the subject. 

He offers a few items that are based on his extensive background and 
knowledge of automotive lighting and as an engineering type I think 
you would enjoy chatting with him. If nothing else his site offers 
some enlightening (pun intended) reading.
