Rich - I've lost track of where you've been with this exercize, so
forgive me if this is something you've already done.  There is a
main ground stud that gathers up several ground wires that is
located behind the vertical carpeted panel at the rear of the parcel
shelf.  The stud is on the passengers side, near the top.  Have you
taken that joint apart and cleaned everything there?  One of the
local club members had a loose connection there, and it raised all
manner of hell with his car until he found and corrected it.  The
stud that collects all of the positive wires in the area, and also
is the stud for jumping the car is also near there, just around the
corner and further aft of the ground stud.  From your description
below, this might be the area that you're working in, but I'm not
quite sure ...

or loose or something. If I could just find it all of this would be
over and I might help out a few other owners as well.  The wiring
diagram indicates that the white/slate wire from the ECU splits off
to many points (i.e. coil, tach, RPM relay). Can anyone tell me
where this junction point is?
