Rich,
If you want a car that gets good milage any of the VW TDIs are the
only way to go, in my opinion. Hybrids suck. A coworker has a TDI
Jetta and gets almost 50mph. Hybrids get closer to 40-45. And, with a
relatively cheap conversion kit (www.greasel.com) you can run straight
veggie oil as well as regular diesel/biodiesel.
I wouldn't mind putting a new VW TDI engine in my DeLorean. I could
probably extract the same amount of power as I currently have and more
than double my gas milage (plus run off of veggie oil).
Another plus with diesel vehicles: When gas starts to get scarce,
diesel is usually plentiful. Keeping large reserves of diesel on hand
is important as a large majority of our food and other needed supplies
are transported by truck, so you can bet when there isn't enough gas
to go around they'll still keep the diesel flowing.
