Well you took the words right out of my mouth, Dave.  I would just add that
even as the barrel price of oil rises, it will still be cheaper than
swapping the entire infrastructure over to another energy source.  Most
likely, that will not be done until we are absolutely forced to do so.
That, or someone literally gives away an Energy OS  (open source)  ;)

Think rationally, Marc...

Oil companies are in the ENERGY business, not just the 'oil' business.  As
soon as more economical sources of energy are developed, you can bet the oil
companies will be all over them -- and in fact, will probably have developed
them.  Twenty years from now you will probably be complaining about the "Big
Solar" companies, etc...

Until the prices of 'alternative' fuels are in line with oil, oil will rule.
This is the simplest of economics.  =)
