I spoke to John last night. You are correct. He prefers a step or two
hotter, to ensure the plugs don't foul after frequent short trips.
Mine are also Bosch copper tip.

Also, for Bill: Being as I've driven the car for extended periods
without this problem, I'm sure that the distributor isn't 1 tooth off.
Technically, I'm still within the manual specs at 15 degrees BTDC
because the manual says +/- 2 degrees.

I don't like "power timing" because as I've said before, I don't
think I'm smarter than the engineers who designed the damn thing. The
book was written that way for a reason, but it looks like that's
where I'm headed so I won't fight it for now since things are
improving.
