Actually Henry Ford is a bit of a paradox:
In addition to the anti-semitism, he was verbally abusive to Edsel
(son). Do not know if he was physically abusive too. People were
surprised enough at the way he treated Edsel in public, even after
Edsel ostensibly became president of the company (Henry regularly
overturned Edsel's decisions, usually with a rebuke in the process) to
comment on it at the time. Crazy thing is: Edsel seemed to adore his
father. Of course he did die an early death from stomach ulcers at age 49.
Ford paid his employees more than any other company at the time, and
introduced the first ever profit sharing program. He went to Europe of
his own volition (privately, not sponsored by any government) to try
to negotiate and end to World War I. He single handedly financed
hospitals, museums, and other public buildings in Dearborn MI.
He's not that different from movie director James Cameron -- a
brilliant genius with many redeeming qualities, who is an asshole
nevertheless. I guess history's full of them.
