Don't totally discount our much maligned PRV. Yes, it suffers a torque
deficiency endemic to all small displacement engines. But it still
comes out ahead of the competition. Ford, for example, was importing a
2.8 liter V6 from Germany for contemporary Mustangs that produced a
maximum 140 ft lbs. I have GM's 151 inch block in my AMC (eventually
finds its way into the Fiero) -- is 10% smaller but produces 15% less
torque (130 max ft lbs), despite the inherent advantages of inline
design. Datsun 280Z and Toyota Supra both debuted in 1979 with inline
6's that max'd out at 145 ft lbs.

Apologies about the interstates. I earned my wheels in VERY different
vehicles. Is sometimes hard to remember now that I'm hurtling down the
highway inches from the pavement in a gigantic piece of plastic.
