Here's what I did... I put a new dryer in for about $50. The orifice tube is
$3. I took it to a professional and had the system oil replaced in the
compressor and the fittings and o-rings installed. They then vacuumed it
down for 45 mins. I asked about replacing hoses and they said it's not
necessary. They filled with R134A and now I've got AC.

Yea, Flame alert...

The oil MUST be changed in the system..  To do this,
every component must be flushed out.  The
receiver/dryer should be replaced, and if you want to
do it RIGHT the rubber hoses and O ring seals should
be replaced.  Might as well replace the orifis while
your in there too!

IMHO, stick with R-12.  If the system is running
properly you wont need to be buying more freon next
year.  TRUE- $2.50 VS $25 a can but do it right and
only do it once.

BTW, I beleive you are not supposed to vent EITHER
freon in to the atmosphere..  The only reason this
whole changeover happened is because DuPont lost the
patent on R-12!
