Gary is right. Welding is half-science, half-art.
When my crumple tube collapsed I checked out all kinds of books from 
the library and read about welding, soldering and brazing thinking I 
was going to "teach" myself how to weld and fix my car myself.
Yeah right, and I'm a Chinese jet pilot.
I learned a lot about the theory, types of welding, heat control, 
melting points of metals and such but without equipment and LOTS of 
metal to practice on, and someone to show you how to move your hands, 
and control the heat, you'd waste a battleship's worth of metal 
before you figure it out for yourself.
I'd love to take a course on it though.
