30 minutes is a minimum.  It's better not to rush it and let
it go for an hour.  I suppose you are going to install the
accumulator yourself?  To get access, you may need to
disconnect the high side line from the evaporator.  I
recommend doing this anyway so that you can replace the
orifice.  A new orifice only costs around $1.50 and are
generally replaced as a matter of common sense.  If the
orifice screen is dirty then consider flushing the whole
system with solvents.  If you are converting to R-134a then
consider upgrading the orifice to a VOV so that you don't
loose cooling performance.  For an R-134a conversion, Ester
oil is a better choice than PAG.

I think it would be a bad idea to try to drive the car with
a vacuum pulled in the a/c system.  The ports in the system
are sealed with schrader valves which basically only hold
pressure in.  They do not hold pressure out.  Hence, if you
have a vacuum in the system and expose a schrader to
atmospheric air then it will pull it in.  To avoid this
problem, charge the system before you disconnect the hoses.
