Many years ago the boys at the diesel shop performed the following
experiment:
Replaced the 600 HP prime mover from a GE 70 ton locomotive (surprised
that a locomotive with "only" 600 HP can move more than 5 million
lbs?) with a 450 HP Cummins truck engine & transmission. Nothing else
was changed -- same generator, same traction motors. Pulling capacity
went down to 800,000 lbs max. Explain THAT without torque.
FYI: parts were becoming scarce/expensive for the GE units in
industrial lease service. Idea was to re-power them with something
cheaper to maintain, yet still capable of switching at least a small
cut of cars. It didn't work.
They called their creation a "truckomotive".
