No they didn't.   In September 1980 the Amex catalogue was mailed to three 
million American Express cardholders around the world so how was it possible to 
have a 24 karat gold plated car when production of these special edition cars 
was only finished in June 1981?   Simple really - they used photos of the 
stainless steel prototype with sliding windows and colored them for printing 
purposes.
