To keep things simple, I really like the fuel pump boot &
cover that Don Steger sells.  The cover is apparently made
from the same material as the boot, so it won't turn as hard
as a rock like the original style ones when they see fuel
fumes.  But beware that if you go this route, buy the boot &
cover together.  The Steger cover is too small to fit the
regular style boot.

acetone
I have found that acetone eats up the new orange hoses that
PJ Grady sells.  You can get away with a quick wipe, but
anything more will dissolve the outer layer.
There are a lot of people wanting to find better ways to do
the fuel pump.  I don't see a solution short of making a new
tank from scratch.  Otherwise the answer is probably to find
a way to mount the pump outside of the tank and seal the
opening with some kind of plate.
