I don't know about DeLorans but Porsche and VW's can be a real PIA to get
the wheel hub off the axel stub.  Before you attempt something like that
make sure that it is the problem.  Put the car up on jack stands and with
the wheels off use a mechanics stethoscope (screw driver) on the rear
carrier to listen to the bearings.  If they are going out you will know it
by the strange grinding and popping sounds.

I spent a day pulling apart one side on my beetle just to find the bearings
were fine.  And talking with other people the sealed pre-packed bearings
like the D uses almost never need to be replaced.  The one thing that kills
them is a sustained submersion.

I'm considering catering to an attack of paranoia and replacing the
rear bearings before/during the trip.
