The reason there's a differential at all in transmissions is so the left
and right tires can travel at different speeds if necessary.  The age-old
example is when turning, the outside wheel needs to travel further.  If
they were locked together, turning would be much more difficult because
you'd be dragging a tire across the ground.  

Both drive wheels (in 2wd system) "have" power, regardless of the
differential type.  If you don't have limited slip, if you stop one of
the drive wheels, the power will divert through the differential to the
other wheel.  You could literally stop the wheel by holding it with your
hand.  By the same reasoning, if one wheel is spinning, the other will
most certainly do nothing.

Limited slip does just that, limit the amount of power transfer through
to each wheel through the differential.  Viscous limited slip uses a
viscous liquid, which forces the transfer of power away from a slipping
wheel.

The porsche transaxle is limited slip, though not viscous.  I still have
no idea how it works, though I've read that it engages different amounts
during acceleration (next to nothing) and deceleration (80% lock) to help
throttle lift oversteer.
