read read and read some more.  Questions are never dumb, stupid maybe...

Transmissions and differentials really are not complicated.  Get some part
catalogs, technical manuals, or maybe get a tranny from the a junk yard for
$25.  Take it apart and try put it back.  I have rebuilt automatics, they
area a pain in the a$$ but they are not as bad as some people say.  I've
also don't manuals they are very easy to understand, but can be picky about
tolerances.

That is why I try to ask the "dumb questions" here!

I know many things, but transmissions & related are a "black hole"
to me.
