It needs to be pressed in and out. If you don't have a 5 ton press that you can use right at the wheel, then the control arm needs to come out. For that to happen, the spring needs to come out, so that adds complexity there. A way of checking the joints... based on GM style joints: Inspect by sight the lower ball joint for wear. The position of the housing into which the grease fitting is threaded indicates wear. This round housing projects 1.27 mm (0.050 in) beyond the surface of the ball joint cover on a new ball joint. Under normal wear, the surface of the ball joint housing retreats inward very slowly. First observe, then scrape a scale, a screwdriver, or a fingernail across the cover. If the round housing is flush with or inside of the cover surface, replace the ball joint. -Dave -----Original Message----- From: cruznmd [mailto:racuti1@xxxxxxxxxxxx] Sent: Wednesday, November 19, 2003 8:33 AM To: DMCForum@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxx Subject: [DMCForum] Lower ball joint replacement Has anyone here replaced their lower ball joints? How difficult was it? Are special tools required? How much interference did you have to remove to do it? Aside from odd tire wear, what are other symptoms of a failing ball joint? Thanks, Rich A.
