Great minds clearly think alike. This is precisely the idea I came up with last night. I found some 194 sized UV LEDs and I have a can of nifty UV-sensitive paint that's totally transparent under regular light, but glows bright red under UV. I'm going to attempt replacing the five illumination bulbs with the UV bulbs and carefully painting the needles with the UV paint and we'll see what happens.
