[DMCForum] dizzy advance cut-off solenoid

After having a discussion with another poster off forum I thought I'd
better mention this.

The vacuum for advance to your ignition distributor on a stock D is
cut off at idle by the idle speed switch. This is done by a normally
open solenoid valve which closes when powered on at idle.

This a three-way solenoid valve. Three-ways exhaust one port
out the top when not active. Thats what that little cap is for on top
of the solenoid, it's where the atmospheric pressure comes in to
equalize the vacuum in the distributor. (Three-ways used in vacuum
applications usually have a filter there to keep dirt from being
sucked into the valve and whatever device it's controlling.)

This means it's imperative the vacuum plumbing to this solenoid is
correct. If you plumb it backwards you'll trap vacuum in your advance
and also have an open path through the solenoid exhaust port to the
intake manifold when the solenoid is activated at idle. Pay careful
attention to the vacuum plumbing schematic because the ports are not
marked on the part itself.

The solenoid port closest to the electrcial connector must go to the
intake manifold and the port farthest away must go to the
distributor. Don't ever treat it as a simple two-way solenoid, in
which case the plumbing would not matter. Get it wrong and you'll
have problems.
