On my engine with only 20k miles half the valves were fine 2 or 3 were
actually staying open a bit.

But if your gage dropped when you unscrewed it I wouldn't trust it to give
you the correct pressure.  The reason they put a check valve in is to
capture the max pressure and hold it.
