If the inside of your fuel tank was this bad then your fuel filter is
probably full of it too.  A book I read on Bosch fuel injection recommends
replacing these filters every year or 10K miles.

So how did you dispose of the old towel?  Light a match to it?  I've
caught
fire to two fuel accumulators so far.  Nothing spectacular.  They just
kind
of look like a mini-flame thrower.
