RE: [DMCForum] shaking steering column

walt and i just did this :-)

Follow your column to the firewall and shake the column there....it should
not move at all.

there is also a bushing at the end of the metal mesh on the column, make
sure its in place.

if your original bushing is there it has probably failed is just sitting
there like a donut....

As far as repalcing it there are 2 ways to go:

1) the quick fix is to buy the soft bushing from Rob ot houston...about
$24 and slice it and wrap it aound the column and force it tinto the
firewall....

2) I bought the delrin plastic one from Daryl T for $16. the way that is
recomended is to remove the steeering column....the first time you do this
it is a pain in the *&^%$. several bolts and about 3 wiring harnesses, to
make it easier romove both knee pads....inside the bonnet rempve both
acces covers....ther is a pinch bolt tight near the firewall...REMOVE THIS
BOLT COMPLETELY. It holds the column to the u- joint anf must be
out....once the column pulls out you just need to pound the new bushin in.
I used a spare sledge hammer handle and just tapped it in place, i put
some lubricant on the bushing to help it...
warning the main bolts that hold the columni in may be tight. i broke my
wiper handle doing this....

then you carefully put steering column back in...what makes this tricky is
the bushing now being place forces you to put the steering column in at a
higher angle which interferes with some brackets under the dash, just move
things as you need to.

before putting things back together put that pinch bolt back in, it should
slide all the way through the column groove and out the other side of the
u-joint.

once it is in just reconnect everything. there are two black handle screws
that are used to adjust the telescoping feature. Just make sure those tabs
are in their track before you put back. You will see them. You will now
have a firm steering wheel.

allow 2-4 hours for troubleshooting and swaring....oh and if your clutch
resevoir hose is dryrotted you will destroy it looseing the pinch bolt :-)

Walt..how was that? :-)

Subject: [DMCForum] shaking steering column

I've noticed in the past month that my steering colomn seems to
shake a bit while I'm going down the highway. My ball joints have
been changed within the past 3 years. My tires are aligned. I'm
assuming the column bushing may be bad. How do I go about testing
this out? is it as easy as looking at it and trying to shake the
column around? how easy/hard is it to replace?

Erik
