[DMCForum] black dye

> The forum has slowed down so I am trying to singlehandidly keep it going
:-)

My e-mail has been so messed up lately that Yahoo unsubscribed me.
Apparently I'm not the only one. I haven't been able to get an e-mail
through to Martin for days.

I have thought that a good quality oil based black leather dye would do
well
on the steering wheel. I haven't tried it, but my experience with dying
leather in the past is that unless it is uniformly clean (or uniformly
dirty) well it has to be uniform anyway or else the dye soaks in on some
spots better than others and makes a mottled look.

I have heard of used car lots using things like shoe polish ;-)

I used black vinyl dye years ago that was alcohol based. It stuck to some
things well and other things it didn't stick to at all. I thought it was
a
piss-poor product and regretted trying it. I hear there are much better
products nowadays.

I have seen gray dye jobs on gray interior cars, and it looks okay when it
is new but then tends to flake/wear off with age.

I saw a DeLorean that had the drivers seat reupholstered in tan vinyl and
then painted gray to match OEM. The gray is cracking/wearing off just
like
you would see cracks in real leather. But obviously it would have been
better if they used gray vinyl to start with.
