I'm in pretty much the same boat you are.  I only have the tiny schematic
that comes in the service manual.

If the gauge itself is fine then look for bad connections in the binnacle.
It uses a funky ribbon/lasagna printed circuit that doesn't always make
the
best connection.

The other likely bad spot is like where Mike said on the upper right side
of
the engine block toward the rear window.  Make sure the wire didn't come
loose and the sender is good.  But I don't see how bad wiring would make
the
needle point in the 5 o'clock position.
