Re: [DMCForum] Rear view mirror

Jim,

How the mirror comes off depends on how it is anchored. As I remember,
your
windshield is a replacement that doesn't have the OEM-looking black patch
to
hide the rear view mirror mounting pad from being seen outside the car.

The OEM configuration uses a piece of double-sided foam tape. It has a
little bit of flexibility to it such that if you twist the mounting pad
then
you will see it shift a bit. Try twisting/pulling it (like unscrewing a
bottle cap) and see if it comes off this way. As it comes free, you will
hear a kind of ripping noise. If it feels like you are forcing it too
much,
then try cutting the tape from the side with a piece of wire. My favorite
is a PVC pipe-cutting wire sold at hardware stores. It is basically a
thin
stainless steel cable similar to bicycle brakes, throttle cables, etc.
The
ends have padded loops so it doesn't cut your fingers, and you use it in a
sawing motion. You can make your own using a thin bass guitar/piano
string
or any other thin braided cable.

If your mirror was attached using glue, then you really have problems.
The
whole point behind using the foam tape is that it allows the materials to
expand/contract according to weather so that the windshield doesn't crack.

If you are otherwise happy with your rear view mirror, then instead of
replacing it, consider putting some sort of sticky goo in the ball-socket
joint. A thin smear of "abrasive" glass-cutting oil or some non-hardening
Permatex Form-A-Gasket in the joint might do the trick. Hold the pad to
the
windshield as you pivot the mirror beyond its limit of travel. The
ball/socket should pop apart easily. Put your goo of choice in the socket
&
snap it back together. If in the process the mounting pad comes loose
from
the windshield then bingo!

Let us know how it turns out.

Walt
