All engines should have been able to run on unleaded petrol from 1986 but there were a few exceptions. Showing my age here, I have the Unleaded Petrol Guide printed in 1989 with the data on which cars (of the time) could & couldn't run on it and which needed a timing reset. Cost me £3.50 and with a timing light got me quite a few beers at uni. NickT. There's a difference between needing to and being able to run on it. The DeLorean will quite happily run on leaded as long as the cat has been removed. But it doesn't need to run on it. That has only to do with really quite older engines that do not have hardened valve seats (although this is an area I don't know much about - happy to be enlightened!). Your 87 car will not have a cat, so it will happily run on leaded fuel, but I don't think it needs to...?
