[doc] Water Leak Resolved

A long update on my water leak. I recently discovered a puddle of
water/coolant under the engine bay of my car. I had lost at least the
header full of liquid, and much of the engine bay under and around
the water pump was damp.
As Boeing is stored in a Permabag, the puddle itself had formed under
that area.
After a lot of good advice from various club members, discussing what
could and should be changed when the water pump had to be
investigated, I was ready to pay to have the work done.
Knowing that I would not be able to drive anywhere I investigated the
possibility of transporting the car to various destinations, the
average for a reputable company with appropriate insurance etc was
~£1.20 per mile. I live 250miles from the two UK specialists so it
was going to be costly?..
Ultimately, to clean up the spill, I refilled the car to reverse it
out of the garage, cleaned up, put the car back and placed a
container under the pump. 15 days later and everything was still dry
with no trace of a leak anywhere.
I arranged to have my local garage (1.2miles away) do a pressure test
and examination on the ramp. Starting the car, I allowed it to warm
up, keeping a track of the effects both on the dash gauge and using
my non-contact thermometer. Normal operating temperatures generated a
small cloud of steam and a very small new puddle, but no immediately
obvious source.
At this point, having insurance with full RAC cover I rang them. The
very helpful chap in the orange van came around. After a great deal
of pressure testing and head scratching he found the leak. The small
pipe, that runs below the header tank but over the alternator was
allowing water to seep past unseen, underneath. By a twist of fate
the leak occurred in such a way that the water was directed onto the
alternator fan, blowing the water into the middle of the engine bay.
The RAC chap didn't have the correct size hose clamps for that pipe,
but went to his supplier to get some. During the attachment of these
the Motorola alternator must have had several litres of water/coolant
flowing over it but has suffered no discernable problems as a result.
Now very happy, the car was refilled and pressure tested again, at
this point a second hose blew off near the radiator at the front of
the car, which was again quickly resolved.
Morals of the story;
· not all leaks come from where they appear to
· the RAC would have transported my car from home to the
destination of my choice, ie one of the specialists if it had been
required
