It's been a while since I read up on auto boxes but I know modern ones
have an auxiliary system to lock the torque convertor - they're never
100% efficient and newer ones have what basically amounts to a clutch to
lock it. This removes much of the economy and accelleration problems.

FWIW take two identical turbocharged cars, one auto and one manual and
the auto will be faster 0-60 because of not losing boost through the
gear changes
